what is a yurt?

noun: a circular domed dwelling that is portable and self supporting; originally used by nomadic Mongol and Turkic people of central Asia ...

These days, those who are drawn to yurt living are interested in finding out what they can comfortably live without.

G’day. This is where Maria, Col, Johanna and the other kids record our travelling adventures. The above photo was taken at Byron Bay, while on our first excursion in July 2009.

We are curious to experience something of the yurting lifestyle … the intention to live a mobile and simple lifestyle. For us that means hitching up our caravan, heading off to some of the great corners of Australia and detoxing from our inner urban habits.

The bits of this that we want to explore are:

  • being out of the city
  • living outdoors and being more connected to the environment
  • mobility / nomadic
  • slowing life down
  • less constrained by routines and responsibilities
  • enjoying the process of hunting/shopping and preparing food – and eating
  • TV – free
  • walking, running, riding, swimming, playing … in parks, on beaches and in the surf
